From Checks to Codes: How Joven is Shaping UnionBank’s Future

I have been with the bank for more than five years now. My journey here began in February 2018 when I started as a Project Hire in the Product Fulfillment Disbursement Checkwriting department.

Even if it was just a short stint in the unit, it paved the way for me to see how the Magis is displayed by UnionBankers. It motivated me to do more as well.  I know that I had to thrive in an agile working environment. I have adapted and learned to work smart. Preciseness is crucial in my role because we handled checks and interacted with client representatives. There were a lot of learnings and good memories with the team, given that I was a fresh graduate back then, it was really a good start.

In 2019, I accepted the challenge of doing a sales function when my manager endorsed me to First Union Direct Corp. I saw it as an opportunity to explore and experience being on the front line and customer-facing. I had to go out of my comfort zone. I was elated with the experience of exceeding the quota, traveling for work and having fun with the sales team. In 2020, another door opened.

Truly, in the Aboitiz Group, there’s endless opportunities for growth. My previous Line Manager from the Checkwriting department offered a regular role in the UnionBank head office and I gladly accepted it. I have now been with the department for over 3 years, taking on various roles. Initially, I worked as a Processor, responsible for printing managers and corporate checks for our clients. Then, I transitioned to the role of Custodian, responsible for in and out of managers and corp checks within the vault. Currently, I serve as a GL (General Ledger), debiting the accounts of clients for every transaction made. As a GL member, one of the challenges I face is handling numerous LOAs (Letters of Authorization) for debiting client accounts, requiring meticulous input of details such as client account numbers, correct amounts, and other transaction specifics.

Fortunately, our team initiated an innovative solution – the RPA Project (Robotic Processing Automation). With this project, a template is created and downloaded from the system, and the team has streamlined the process. The robot takes over the processing, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. My role now involves verifying the details generated by the robot, which, being sourced directly from the system, significantly reduces the likelihood of errors. In the past, two members must work on every assigned process but since the RPA project, it’s now being handled by just one member. We’re able to reduce the manpower cost. 2,000+hours savings per year.

Thanks to this digital transformation and integration of technology, my productivity has soared, allowing me to complete tasks in a shorter time frame. This efficiency has provided me with the opportunity to engage in additional activities, such as pursuing online courses and collaborating with my workmates on Ubuntu together.

Embracing technology has not only made us more productive but also fostered a healthier work-life balance.

It has been a fulfilling journey, and I am grateful for the opportunities Unionbank has provided me. I look forward to the numerous possibilities on how I can develop myself and contribute to the growth of the organization.
