What makes someone trade the familiar world of food manufacturing for the uncharted territory of banking?
For Abby Ruelo, CitySavings’ Product Manager, it was a deep desire to grow and make a lasting impact on people’s lives. Her fearless attitude toward change pushed her beyond her comfort zone. And today, she helps everyday Filipinos achieve their dreams, showing that a lifelong commitment to purpose unlocks incredible possibilities when we have the courage to take a leap.
Let’s explore Abby’s inspiring career transformation and discover how embracing one’s north star can lead to a fulfilling life.
Fresh out of college as a Development Communication graduate, I quickly joined the “Masarap Kahit Walang Palaman” bread company. I had the opportunity to work with the leader behind Gardenia’s success in the country. He ignited my passion for marketing and planted in my DNA the importance of always putting customers as the top priority.
In my early 20s, I launched my very first products-Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal. This was a partnership between big bakers, Dept of Trade and Industry and major supermarkets. We were able to provide quality breads that are within the reach of Filipino masses.
However, It became my comfort zone.
At that time, I felt I was at the crossroads. Either, I stay or expand my comfort zone.
I chose the later. I worked my way to other food manufacturing companies– “Sarap ng Filling mo” biscuit company (Rebisco), beverage company that produces the “Tunay Na Lakas” energy drink. I deepened my marketing management, product development, business development and consumer insighting with all the work experiences.
As I navigate my 30s, learning is a continuous journey. I’m always excited to learn new things. Yes, there is always the learning curve, new people to work with. But, I am always loyal to my purpose–putting customers as the top priority. This always fuels me.
During the pandemic, I jumped to an unknown industry–banking. I joined a purpose-driven bank– CitySavings bank. Aligned with my personal purpose, It’s highly customer focus with its vision to be the leading mass market bank in the Philippines creating innovative solutions that make banking simple for our customers. It’s fulfilling to see the genuine smile of our customers — those with moderate means (like teachers, soldiers, pensioners)—when they avail of our products and services. CitySavings is an enabler–enabling our customers to achieve their dreams NOW. With their product availment, they can send their kids to school, they can build their dream houses and they can experience that well-deserved vacation.
Difference between baker and banker? It’s the addition of the letter N.
